The neighborhood where Carlinhos Brown was born and raised, Candeal, was an area of freed slaves during the XVII century and it maintains its strength through the beating of the drums, holding its culture as the main resource for the development and sustainability of the community.
Candeal became a musical warehouse, famous for consolidating music as a way of life, creating professional possibilities for young people from the community and training them in musical professions. The population’s engagement in this partnership with public and private institutions has transformed the traditional image of Brazilian favelas (urban slums) and has transformed the neighborhood of Candeal into a community development model which has gained much deserved national and international recognition, through many awards in the social arena.
The Associação Pracatum Ação Social (Pratacum Social Action Association) – APAS, was created by Carlinhos Brown with the objective of developing a critical project around the trio “education and culture, organizing, and urbanization”. As a non-profit NGO, APAS’ mission is to better resident’s quality of life through community development, and educational and cultural programs. APAS’ social initiatives are characteristic of Carlinhos Brown’s preoccupation with social responsibility and inserting Candeal’s youth into the job market and the world.
